The Minnesota Timberwolves trade Etan Thomas to the Thunder

Blogged under General, Comings & Goings, Bloglockers, Big Timberwolves News, Front Page by alleyoop on Tuesday 28 July 2009 at 4:55 pm

The Timberwolves have traded 31-year old center Etan Thomas and two second round picks in the 2010 NBA Draft to the Oklahoma City Thunder for 29-year old SG/SF Damien Wilkins and 34-year old point guard Chucky Atkins. Thomas had just been acquired in a trade with the Wizards shortly before the NBA Draft so the T-Wolves won’t likely miss him much. Wilkins gives the Timberwolves a good energy player off the bench. Wilkins played in 41 games (14 starts) for the Thunder last season and he averaged 15.5 minutes, 5.3 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game. He has now played in 310 games (95 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 21.2 minutes, 7.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. Atkins will provide a mentor off the bench for the young point guards of the Timberwolves. Atkins played in 32 games (0 starts) for the Nuggets and Thunder last season in which he averaged 12.9 minutes, 3.1 points, 0.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Atkins has now played in 655 games (314 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 25.4 minutes, 10.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. This was a good trade for the Timberwolves as Wilkins and Atkins should really help the bench unit.

The Minnesota Timberwolves acquire Quentin Richardson from the Clippers

The Timberwolves have acquired 29-year old SG/SF Quentin Richardson from the Clippers for 24-year old point guard Sebastian Telfair, 25-year old power forward Craig Smith and 33-year old power forward Mark Madsen. Richardson played in 72 games (51 starts) for the Knicks last season and he averaged 26.3 minutes, 10.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. He has now played in 601 games (389 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 28.0 minutes, 11.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. Richardson was probably the best player involved in this trade so the Timberwolves took quality over quantity.

Sebastian Telfair played in 75 games (43 starts) for the T-Wolves last year and he averaged 27.9 minutes, 9.8 points, 1.7 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.0 steal per game. Telfair only shot 38.3% from the floor and that’s part of the reason the T-Wolves drafted heavily in point guards last month. Craig Smith played in 74 games (31 starts) last season for the Timberwolves and he averaged 19.7 minutes, 10.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. He does have a nice upside and he could come back to haunt the Wolves if he ever gets a starting gig. Mark Madsen is the 12th man. He played in only 19 games (1 start) for the Wolves last season and he averaged 6.1 minutes, 0.3 points, 0.9 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game. He has no upside.

The Minnesota Timberwolves re-sign Bobby Brown

Blogged under General, Comings & Goings, Bloglockers, Big Timberwolves News, Front Page by alleyoop on Wednesday 15 July 2009 at 9:09 pm

The Timberwolves have re-signed 24-year old shooting guard Bobby Brown to a 1-year deal. Brown played in 21 games (1 start) for the Wolves last season and he averaged 12.2 minutes, 5.5 points, 0.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. Brown played in 68 games (2 starts) as a rookie last season for the Kings and T-Wolves in which he averaged 13.7 minutes, 5.3 points, 0.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. It was a smart move to bring Brown back as he has some potential as a offensive player.
