The Minnesota Timberwolves release Chucky Atkins

Blogged under General, Comings & Goings, Bloglockers, Big Timberwolves News, Front Page by alleyoop on Wednesday 23 September 2009 at 9:16 pm

The T-Wolves have decided to cut 35-year old guard Chucky Atkins. Atkins played in 32 games (0 starts) last season with the Nuggets and Thunder last season and he averaged 12.9 minutes, 3.1 points, 0.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. The Wolves are so loaded depth wise at guard that they won’t miss Atkins too much and this gives him a chance to find another team that he fits better on.

The Minnesota Timberwolves appear loaded at point guard for this season

The Timberwolves have loaded up at point guard for the 2009-2010 NBA season. The Timberwolves have signed restricted free agent Ramon Sessions who will take over as the starting point guard this year. The 23-year old Sessions played in 79 games for the Bucks last season and he averaged 27.5 minutes, 12.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Sessions is just scratching the surface of his ability and the Wolves will likely let him run the show when he’s on the basketball court. The T-Wolves used the 6th pick in the NBA Draft to pick Jonny Flynn out of Syracuse. He will likely sit a lot this season behind all of the veterans the Wolves have brought in. 34-year old Antonio Daniels was brought in with a trade with the Hornets recently. He played in 74 games for the Hornets and Wizards last season and he averaged 13.8 minutes, 4.1 points, 1.0 rebound and 2.4 assists per game. He is better than he played last season and he will likely get a lot of minutes behind Sessions. He can also handle playing off guard position and he will likely get some minutes there. 35-year old Chucky Atkins came over from the Thunder in a trade and he could add some zip off the bench. He played in 32 games for the Nuggets and Thunder last season and he averaged 12.9 minutes, 3.1 points, 0.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Atkins is a shoot first point guard who will find minutes hard to come by this season with the Wolves.

PROJECTED GRADE FOR THE POINT GUARDS IN 2009-2010: B-

The Minnesota Timberwolves sign Sasha Pavlovic

Blogged under General, Comings & Goings, Bloglockers, Big Timberwolves News, Front Page by alleyoop on Wednesday 16 September 2009 at 11:37 pm

The T-Wolves have signed 25-year old SG/SF Sasha Pavlovic to a 1-year, $1.4 million dollar deal. Pavlovic played in 68 games (12 starts) for the Cavs last season and he averaged 16.0 minutes, 4.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. He has now played in 381 games (127 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 17.3 minutes, 5.8 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game. This was a good signing for the T-Wolves as Pavlovic has a nice upside and the price was right to take a chance on him.

The Minnesota Timbewolves sign Ramon Sessions

The Milwaukee Bucks decided not to match the T-Wolves offer of 4-years and $16.4 million bucks to Ramon Sessions meaning that he now plays for Minnesota.  The 23-year old Sessions played in 79 games (39 starts) for the Bucks last season and he averaged 27.5 minutes, 12.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.0 steal per game.  Sessions has played two years in his NBA career in which he has played in 96 games (46 starts) in which he has averaged 27.3 minutes, 11.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.0 steal per game.  Finally a good move by the Timberwolves as Sessions is a young player on the rise.

The Minnesota Timberwolves acquire Antonio Daniels from the Hornets

The Timberwolves have acquired 34-year old point guard Antonio Daniels and a 2nd round pick in the 2012 NBA Draft for 31-year old power forward Darius Songaila and 24-year old combo guard Bobby Brown.  The 34-year old Daniels will likely play both the point and shooting guard positions off the bench next season for the T-Wolves.  Daniels played in 74 games (9 starts) last season for the Wizards and Hornets averaging 13.8 minutes, 4.1 points, 1.0 rebound and 2.4 assists per game.  Daniels has now played in 868 games (220 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 22.6 minutes, 7.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.  Daniels was the best player involved in this trade but the Wolves could have used Songaila this season.  Bobby Brown played in 21 games (2 starts) for the T-Wolves last season and he averaged 12.2 minutes, 5.5 points, 0.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
